About Nick -Standardized Test Background

I began tutoring SAT/ACT in 2009 under the direction of an esteemed private tutor. Two years later, I started my own business and soon had a waitlist of students interested in prepping with me. When I wasn't out tutoring at suburban homes and libraries, I authored two test prep guides that were used by school districts, tutoring centers, and students nationwide.

In 2012, I opened a commercial location of Superior Test Prep Tutoring in Rolling Meadows, IL. For the next ten years my job was to be an expert on 6th to 12th grade academics, the college admission process, and standardized tests. I taught classes, trained tutors, and worked 1 to 1 with our hard-working students.

After a great run, I sold much of the business in 2022. It was time for a change: no more employees or office to maintain; no more accommodating dozens of families simultaneously. Now I'm working with a limited caseload, giving each student a premium experience. Every tutoring session is personalized using recent exam questions and customized worksheets to target the student's most pressing needs. Furthermore, I'm entirely transparent about each student's potential and exactly what's needed to maximize it.

Every student needs a solid base in strategy and test timing. Then, for some students, it's predominantly about creating a formula sheet or grammar rule guide and drilling problem areas until they're second nature. For others, there's more extensive work to do in building general math or reading skills. We'll work together, doing whatever it takes to reach goals as efficiently as possible.

Academic Tutoring and College Essays

In addition to standardized exams, I've tutored nearly every high school class (as well as plenty of college courses). My goal is to foster a logical, rational understanding of the material. Pure memorization is occasionally necessary, but usually it's a last resort. With a strong understanding of the content, the class slows down a bit. New concepts are integrated seamlessly, homework isn't as painful, and you may even find the material interesting.

My specialties:

Math - All classes through Calculus BC.

English - Editing Papers, AP prep, and college essays

Science - All non-AP classes, especially chemistry and physics

Business - Accounting and economics

General organization and study skills

While they aren't specialties, I've tutored everything from Spanish 101 to AP World History. I even give music theory and guitar lessons occasionally. Give me a call to discuss your needs.

About Me

I live in Chicago with my wife, Amy, and dog, Fizz. In addition to teaching, my passions are travel, music, sports, and novels. I've backpacked in 50 countries, which has given me a great appreciation of the varied cultures of the world. When home in Chicago, I play guitar in small-time local bands. I also like to get out and see live music every week. My fandom centers around the White Sox, Badgers (Wisconsin alum), and Bears. Of course, go Bulls and Hawks as well. I can tolerate the Cubs. Some favorite novels include A Confederacy of Dunces, Infinite Jest, and Cat's Cradle.
